Paint, Mat & Frame Workshop

We will be creating a small painting, using watercolor skills and varied materials. Then, moving on for a ‘how-to-mat-and-frame’ lesson, with 8 x 10”metal frame and all its components. Mat and glass included. Amazing? We can do it!


Location: Kittery Art Association at the HUB/lower level,

2 Walker Street, Kittery, Maine 03904

Time: 10 am to 4 pm. At 3:30 we’ll have a look at the day’s work, then cleanup.


The Painting: River rocks, sea stones. To create value changes, texture, and colors, we will be using rub off technique, using stencils/hand cut, salt and candle wax resists, and a lot of negative painting skill.

Both abstract and realistic. 


The Framing:I f you have never assembled one of these metal frames, this will take the guesswork out of it. Single mat, backer board, frame, and glass will come in your package along with necessary hardware. Bring a phillips head and regular/minus screw driver. That’s it!



Materials for you to bring:


  • Screw driver, hair dryer

  • Watercolor paint in palette and brushes (at least #4, 6, 10 round and 1” flat) 

  • Backer board, approx 9 x 11, small size.

  • Masking tape, water dish, paper towels, ruler

  • Photos of river/sea rocks with texture to look at for realistic effects.


Materials Provided:


  • Frame kit ($25 each payable to Doris) 

  • Wax, salt, 100% cotton rag watercolor paper cut to size. 

  • Small piece of sponge.

  • Xacto knife (or bring your own), EZ cut rubber board.

  • Waxed stencil paper


Food:


  • Coffee and tea provided. Bring your own mug. 

  • Lunch break 1:00 ish…small refrigerator available.

  • Doris will provide the salad greens and dressing/plates and forks. Bring a small something to add to it and we will have a fun shared lunch.


Cost: $95 per person. non refundable.


Plus materials cost: $25.00 if you’d like to try assembling the metal frame.  Framing material optional, let me know.
